WelcomeWelcome to the webpage of the Eighth Canadian Powder Diffraction Workshop. This workshop is in its sixth implementation and is aimed at people both new to powder diffraction and those who want a refresher. It is being held at the Pavillon Ringuet, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Québec on Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd of June 2010. The workshop is open to anyone interested in making use of powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis as an aid to their research and analysis. The day following the workshop, Thursday, June 24, 2010 is the Saint Jean Baptiste Day public holiday in Quebec. First and Second Day: Powder Diffraction and Rietveld AnalysisThe first two days will consist of lectures on a variety of topics that are planned for the morning, where the main theme is to assist participants in using the Rietveld method. The afternoon will consist of hands-on computer based tutorials in one of the Chemistry Department computer rooms. Chaired by Professor Jacques Huot of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, speakers include Dr Robert Von Dreele of Argonne National Laboratory (and co-author of the widely used GSAS Rietveld software), Dr Angus Wilkinson of Georgia Tech, Dr Ian Swainson and Lachlan Cranswick (both from the National Research Council of Canada). Most of the afternoon practical sessions will concentrate on performing Rietveld analysis, for structure refinement and quantitative phase analysis. The GSAS software (Robert Von Dreele and Allen Larson), and EXPGUI interface (Brian Toby), will be the software used. Third Day: PDF (Pair Distribution Function) and Total Scattering analysis presented by Thomas ProffenThe final day will concentrate on PDF (Pair Distribution Function) and Total Scattering analysis. This will be presented by Dr Thomas Proffen of the Los Alamos based Lujan Neutron Scattering Center. PDF analysis is effective for analysis of amorphous / small crystallite size / nano materials as well as complex disorder problems in highly crystalline materials. Thomas is the instrument scientist for the NPDF high-resolution total-scattering powder diffractometer, and is the author and co-author of a variety of packages relevant to Total Scattering analysis, including the DISCUS software. All the information you need to decide and plan to attend this workshop should be viewable via the main menu. Feel free to contact us if you have any queries that these webpages don't seem to answer. Realising that some may like to bring friends and/or family to visit the Trois-Rivières Region and beyond, there is also accompanying person(s) information and resources. We are most thankful to support and sponsorship from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Hydro-Québec, Canadian Institute for Neutron Scattering, National Research Council of Canada and the LANSCE Neutron Scattering Centre.
