9th Canadian Powder Diffraction Workshop 9th Powder Diffraction Workshop

Welcome

Welcome to the webpage of the Ninth Canadian Powder Diffraction Workshop. This workshop has been run in various formats since the ealry 1990's, and is aimed at people both new to powder diffraction and those who want a refresher. It is being held at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Wednesday 23rd to Friday 25th of May 2012. The specfic lecture halls will be confirmed shortly. The workshop is open to anyone interested in making use of powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis as an aid to their research and analysis.

First and Second Day: Powder Diffraction and Rietveld Analysis

The first two days will consist of lectures on a variety of topics that are planned for the morning, where the main theme is to assist participants in using the Rietveld method. The afternoon will consist of hands-on computer based tutorials. Our local host is Professor Jim Hendry of the Dept of Geological Sciences, University of Saskatchewan, and we owe much thanks to Fina Nelson of the same department for help with much of the local organization. Speakers include Dr Robert Von Dreele of Argonne National Laboratory (and co-author of the widely used GSAS Rietveld software), Dr Angus Wilkinson of Georgia Tech, Dr Ian Swainson and Dr Pam Whitfield (both from the National Research Council of Canada) and Dr Joel Reid (CLS). Most of the afternoon practical sessions will concentrate on performing Rietveld analysis, for structure refinement and quantitative phase analysis. The GSAS software (Robert Von Dreele and Allen Larson), and EXPGUI interface (Brian Toby), will be the software used.

Third Day: PDF (Pair Distribution Function) and Total Scattering analysis presented by Thomas Proffen

The final day will concentrate on PDF (Pair Distribution Function) and Total Scattering analysis. This will be presented by Dr Thomas Proffen of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory based Spallation Neutron Source. PDF analysis is effective for analysis of amorphous / small crystallite size / nano materials as well as complex disorder problems in highly crystalline materials. Thomas is the author and co-author of a variety of packages relevant to Total Scattering analysis, including the DISCUS software.
