About CINS

CINS is the organization in Canada that represents the users of neutron beam methods in scientific research. Neutron scattering is a versatile and powerful technique for research in materials of all kinds. Pioneered in Canada in the 1950s neutron scattering continues to play an valuable role in Canadian science.

CINS is managed by an elected executive, and supported by a board of trustees from Canadian universities and industry. Membership in CINS is free. CINS also trains graduate scientists through workshops and by direct research experience at the neutron beam facilities.

Because of the wide variety of materials that can be studied using neutron scattering, the scientific community represented by CINS is diverse. Our members are engaged in research in engineering materials such as steel and other alloys, biomembranes and lipid structures, magnetic materials and superconductors, thin films and nanolayered materials, polymers, composites, minerals, glasses and more. Consequently the membership of CINS includes specialists in physics, chemistry, engineering, bioscience and the earth-sciences.

CINS represents students, professors and researchers in the university community, as well as scientists in industry and government labs. We are proud to continue the tradition of neutron scattering in Canada.

Objectives of the Institute

  1. To stimulate and facilitate research by Canadian Scientists using slow neutrons.
  2. To establish priorities for the development of facilities for neutron scattering in Canada.
  3. To make representations to the appropriate bodies and authorities for the provision of adequate facilities and funding for researchers using slow neutrons.
  4. To co-ordinate the formulation of joint or separate proposals for instrumentation and infrastructure for submission to granting agencies.
  5. To administer infrastructure grants that may be awarded for such research, subject to any conditions that may be imposed by the granting agency.
  6. To carry out any other activities that would further these objectives. The Institute sponsors Schools and Workshops that provide theoretical and practical training, and provides travel help to scientists located at large distances from the neutron facilities.

Membership of CINS

CINS welcomes members from all scientific disciplines. Presently, its membership totals over 200, with broad representation from physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering. These include university faculty, professional scientists and engineers, research technicians, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. Membership is free.

Membership of CINS includes the optional participation in the CINSnet mailing list.
